AMPS IN ACTION for Haiti

The recent earthquake in Haiti and the thousands of amputations being performed there is of great concern to our group. Much of the January meeting was spent discussing how and when we could help. The How - is to tap into the abundant resource of unused prosthetics and assistive devices stored away in attics and garages throughout our area. Anyone who has been an amputee for any length of time, or broken a leg has these items stashed away somewhere collecting dust. Because of liability issues, these items can't be used here in the US. We have been offered storage and will immediately begin collecting these devices, several of the members in attendance have offered to pick-up the items from most of the Southern NJ & Philadelphia areas. Contact Andrea at VARONEA@aol.com (856)988-8778 ext 3030, Dennis at denodonnell@verizon.net / (856)278-2422, or info@ampsinaction.org .  Items can also be dropped off at or shipped to

                 c/o 100 Brick Rd
                 Suite 315
                 Marlton, NJ 08053

        What to donate:
        Used Limbs
        Prosthetic accessories
        Prosthetic socks & liners
                Canes, Crutches, & Walkers
        Wheelchairs

The When - Although we will be collecting these items now, shipments won't be sent to Haiti for six to eight months. Currently the infrastructure of Haiti is destroyed, several of the agencies that prior to the earthquake were working in Haiti have suffered the loss of their facilities, restoration and establishment of prosthetic facilities with adequate equipment will need to be in place prior to our shipping the collected items down there. The goal is to have the shipments ready when the time comes.

Gwen the Alpaca Update

Unfortunately sad news, Gwen delivered her cria on March 27th, almost 2 weeks early, and the little one was not strong enough to make it.  Elizabeth told me, that the cria was beautiful, a deep caramel color with a white star on her forehead, and with no visible signs of why she died.  She weighed about 12 lbs, they’ve had smaller ones that had made it, so obviously they are heartbroken.

Sesame Street Special

Tune in to PBS on April 1, 2009 at 8 p.m. to join Queen Latifah, John Mayer, and your Sesame Street friends for Coming Home: Military Families Cope With Change. This family television special tells the stories of military families coping with the challenges and impact of combat-related injuries—both visible (such as the loss of a limb) and invisible (such as post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury). Join these families as they recount their heroic struggles and discover the remarkable resiliency that sets them on the path to finding a “new normal.  With help from Elmo, Rosita, and the Sesame Street friends, Coming Home gives voice to children as they play a central role in the family's adjustment process, and encourages them to be what they are: kids. The program also features coping strategies and powerful real stories aimed to help these families and others find ways to be there for each other.
Join them as we salute the extraordinary courage of children, offer the general public ways to support service members in their communities, and provide a powerful glimpse into the lives of military families. We encourage children to watch “Coming Home” with a parent or caregiver so they can ask an adult any questions they might have.
Coming Home is part of Sesame Workshop’s Talk, Listen, Connect initiative, providing support and resources for families experiencing deployment, multiple deployments, or changes due to combat-related injury. “Talk, Listen, Connect” kits include DVDs and print materials for children and parents

Lobby Day Follow-up

Thank You to all who participated! Despite some glitches, our Lobby Day in DC was a successful event. Members of our group met with the staff of both NJ Senators and also staff of several NJ Congressman and were received well by most. This is only the beginning of a long process. We are putting together our action plan for continued support of the bills, first to assure that they are reintroduced and secondly to gain the need support for their passage into law. Most of our efforts for the remainder of 2009 will be locally, visiting local representative's offices, email & phone campaigns, which were al very successful in the passage of the NJ Parity Law. Please watch the website for update information and the addition of photos from our DC trip. Lobby Day Photos

Amputee Stories To Replace Amputee Forum

Since there so many issues with the Amputee Forum we are in the process of replacing it with Amputee Stories send us your story, you know the usual How - Why - When - Where and the adjustments you have made. Include a photo or two. Send the stories to  info@ampsinaction.org and we'll begin adding them to the site. Remember your story could be the motivation for someone else.

Banned challenged athletes from Olympics?
Here's a link to an article sent to me by Susan about South African amputee champion runner, Oscar Pistorius who was banned from the Olympics. http://www.ocregister.com/life/reinersten-iaaf-jake-1989169-pistorius-leg
Oscar Pistorius has had the ruling overturned and now is cleared to enter the Olympics, he is still required to compete and earn his place on the team.

Parity Picnic

We worked hard to get the New Jersey Parity Law passed so we'd like to have a Parity Picnic to celebrate. The Parity Law takes effect on April 13th, so at the April meeting we will discuss a date & place for the picnic. We are now looking at the end of May or June, more info  to follow.

Limbs for life

We need your old prosthetics & components! AMPS IN ACTION will be collecting these items at the April meeting or can make other arrangements to collect these items which will be sent to Limbs for life.

If you wish, you can attach a note to the prosthetics you donate with your name & address and a detailed description of your donation. A letter of appreciation will be mailed to you, which can be used for tax purposes.

Thanks to the World Limb Bank, Limbs For Life is able to collect used limbs and distribute them, free of charge, to amputees in developing countries. Components from donated limbs are utilized to create new prosthetics, thus reducing costs for the prosthetist.

What to donate:
Used Limbs
Prosthetic accessories
Unused socks or liners
What NOT to donate:
Sockets
Used socks or liners
Orthotics

Anything you have and are not sure about or if you can't remove the sockets just bring it along and we'll sort it out it out for you. Remember many of us have struggled to get our limbs because of insurance issues, try to imagine life in an underdeveloped country as an amputee. Once again it's time to emphasis the ACTION in AMPS IN ACTION!

NJ Parity Bill Info

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who supported the New Jersey Orthotic & Prosthetic Parity Bill!

The bill passed January 7th @ 8:45 PM the last session of the legislature, New Jersey is now the 8th state to pass a parity bill and it's believed to be the strongest. What happens next? Hopefully the Governor signs it or if no action is taken in 45 days it becomes law. Ninety days after one of those things happen the bill takes affect.

Parity Bills

On 5/14/2007 the NJ Senate Commerce Committee sent Parity Bill S502 out of it's committee with a recommended amendment to the Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee for review. After review it will be sent to the floor for a vote by the full Senate. House Bill A1011 pending a floor vote in the NJ Assembly. (Most likely it will be held for comparison to the amended Senate bill so that both bills are still identical when voted on) In addition I'd like to thank Susan Lazarchick, Roger Kearns, and Ray Snipes for making the trip to Trenton for the hearing. Roger, was put on the spot and asked to testify before the committee, he did an outstanding job supplied needed info for Senator Gill to drive home her reason for sponsoring this bill. She made it clear that her tax dollars and those of other NJ citizens shouldn't be paying for our prosthetics when the insurance companies have collected the premiums for so many years. Varone, 42, who's been a physical therapist at Marlton Rehabilitation Hospital for 10 years, specializes in the treatment of those who have lost limbs, conditioning them to continue the normalcy of their lives through the use of prosthetics.
In addition to the physical therapy sessions that Varone conducts at Marlton Rehabilitation Hospital, she's the founder of an amputee support group, "Amps In Action," for recent and veteran amputees.
